The recent droughts have led to discussions about water reuse and the economical use of freshwater. The project ‘WWTP as water factory for a robust water supply’ looked at the hydrological effects of water reuse, the system optimisation and the cost-benefit analysis of the various system solutions.

The drought periods of recent years have given a major boost to the discussion around water scarcity and the economical use of fresh water in the Netherlands. There is a need for adaptive solutions for the development of (more) circular water systems; solutions that provide insight into the existing water system and are flexible enough to respond to changes in time and space.

This article discusses a method for identifying the most affordable system solution in the context of water circularity.

In East Brabant, a case study was carried out on behalf of Stichting Toegepast Onderzoek Waterbeheer (STOWA), in collaboration with the province of Noord-Brabant, waterboard Aa en Maas and drinking water company Brabant Water, and in coordination with knowledge institute KWR. The underlying study is publicly available on stowa’s website.
